2nd 2-In-1 Merdeka Charity Food Bazaar 2019

The only time in Tune Protect when our rival culinary skills, creativity and marketing prowess collide for a very good cause!

Merdeka Charity Food Bazaar 2019

The mission was to raise funds to purchase laptops for our Tune Protect Orang Asli Financial Literacy, Empowerment & Entrepreneurship (FLEE) bootcampers to help them start their businesses. The strategy was to pit departments against each other in a healthy competition to raise funds for the project. Smaller departments combined forces against the bigger ones and menu items were kept secret until the final menu was published. The rules were flexible – departments could cook, prepare and sell or resell as much food and drinks that they could. Pricing was totally up to the department. The department that raises the most funds wins a surprise! There was only one main rule – selling could only start at 12.00pm and the last sale cannot pass 2pm.

It was an effort that brought Malaysians of various races and religions together in support of the underserved Orang Asli community. It was also a notable environmental protection effort. 2-in-1 would really be an understatement.

Why was this it coined 2-in-1? It was a CSR initiative that also had a “pinch of green” because there were no disposable plates, cups and eating utensils used. Diners had to bring their own reusable items. In addition, non-toxic biodegradable washing detergent was supplied to protect our waterways. Finally, photodegradable garbage bags that biodegrade naturally in the heat were also used.

Tune Protect 5th Blood Donation Drive 2019

Tune Protect Saves the Day Again During Ramadhan 2019!

Blood Donation 2019

It was the 5th time Superheroes gathered at the Wisma Tune Ground Floor Lobby. They came in all shapes and sizes, in answer to the S.O.S. appeal made by the National Blood Bank because of the critically low supply of blood during Ramadhan when our Muslim brothers and sisters are unable to donate blood. Here is our step by step guide on blood donation :

Step 1
Every potential donor will begin with filling out the form provided by the National Blood Bank. Potential donors would have to fill them out honestly and it is the first step in ensuring that the donation is safe for both the donor and donee. It is the preliminary screening that may exclude donors who for various reasons, including lack of sleep, pregnancy, illnesses, congenital conditions, low or high blood pressure, donor under medication…the list is long, and rightfully so, because safety must come first! Regular donors have to undergo the same process to each and every time they donate.

Blood Donation 2019
Signing up is serious business. Very important questions will be asked
Blood Donation 2019
Potential donors must answer all questions honestly

Step 2
After filling out the form, potential donors move to the next station where their weight is taken to make ensure they meet with the minimum weight requirement of 45 kgs. After passing the weight test, their fingers are pricked to confirm their blood type and hemoglobin levels.

Blood Donation 2019
At this station, nurses clean the potential donor’s finger with an alcohol swab to rid the finger of all bacteria, virus and contamination
Blood Donation 2019
The cleaned finger is then pricked with a sterile disposable needle. It just like an ant bite that even this lady can smile about

Step 3
Next, potential donors meet the doctor for a face-2-face interview. The doctor will ask questions to determine that the information provided is true and it is safe for the donor to proceed. The doctor can reject the donor if she thinks safety will be compromised. For example, potential donors who recently underwent body piercings or tattooing may be asked to defer their donation until several months later.

Blood Donation 2019
The gatekeeper doctor interviews every potential donor to ensure that the declarations made are true and the donor is ready to donate. Many get rejected at this stage
Blood Donation 2019
With the doctor’s green light, the donor proceeds for registration. A special ID No. will be tagged to the donation. Over here, donors are asked to drink some water

Step 4
Once the donor is registered in the system, a special ID is generated. Occasionally, the Blood Bank may contact the donor is they discover that the blood is contaminated or if the donor is ill. Blood will be screened for certain infectious disease pathogens, such as hepatitis B and C viruses and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Blood Donation 2019
Some find it exciting to donate blood like these folks from Tune Talk
Blood Donation 2019
Some prefer to relax while donating like these two young ladies

Step 5
After donating, donors are treated to light snacks such as biscuits, cream buns and boxed drinks. The Blood Bank also provided a supply several days’ worth of iron and folic acid tablets to replenish the donor’s iron levels. In addition to the certificate of appreciation provided by the Blood Bank, Tune Protect thanked all donors with a collectible Superhero Blood Donor Badge. For this donation, every donor received ProEnergy!

A CSR & Green initiative in collaboration with the Wisma Tune Go Green Committee

Pre-Loved Charity Bazaar 2019

Tune Protect led the way with the Wisma Tune GoGreen Pre-Loved Charity Bazaar. Tune Protect and affiliated companies Tune Group, Tune Talk, BigPay and AirAsia BigLoyalty joined forces in this effort to raise funds for the replacement of aging air-conditioners with energy-saving inverter ones favouring Bake with Dignity, a bakery that employs bakers with learning disabilities such as Autism, Down Syndrome and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This was both, a CSR and GoGreen initiative combined because it benefited a charitable organization by helping to lower it electricity bills (CSR) and lower its electricity usage/carbon output (green mission).

As the organizer of the event, Tune Protect pledged 100% of the proceeds from sales to Tune Protect’s “Sponsor Bake with Dignity” initiative. The other affiliates pledged 50% of their proceed to this cause too and retained the remaining 50% for their respective internal green initiatives.

Pre-Loved Charity Bazaar 2019

The GoGreen teams began setting up their stalls as early as 9am. There was a lot of good stuff on display that were donated by the staff of the respective companies. Most were preloved items and some were brand new.

The bazaar was a great success because it raised RM4,454 in just 4 hours…that’s about RM1,113.50 per hour! After our affiliates deducted 50% of the proceeds for their own respective internal green causes, the final total amount raised and forwarded towards “Sponsor Bake with Dignity” was a nice RM3,002!

Tune Protect Sponsor Bake with Dignity 2019

Community Engagement and Energy Conservation Never Smelt So Yummy!

Tune Protect Sponsor Bake with Dignity 2019

On 14 February 2019, Tune Protect collaborated with the Truly Loving Company (TLC) to sponsor the Bake with Dignity (BWD), a bakery that employs bakers with learning disabilities such as Autism, Down Syndrome and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Employment at the bakery provides their bakers with a great sense of dignity and self-worth because they are given the opportunity to learn new skills and earn an income applying the skills learnt. BWD has a mouth-watering range of cakes, brownies, fudge, crumbles, cookies, pies, just to name a few.

Tune Protect sponsored the purchase and installation of 2 energy efficient air-conditioners to help reduced BWD’s utility bills and its carbon footprint. The lowered utility bills would contribute to lower operational costs, in addition to providing a cooler reception area and other areas as well. The funds sponsored were mainly from the proceeds of the Pre-Loved Charity Bazaar that Tune Protect organized.

Tune Protect 4th Blood Donation Drive 2018

Promoting Regular Blood Donation to Reduce Heart Disease Risk

Blood Donation Tune Protect

In conjunction with Tune Protect’s Heart Health Month 2018, we organized another Blood Donation Drive because donating blood is closely linked to heart health. According to a study in the Journal of Blood Medicine, donating blood regularly can reduce the risk of heart disease by significantly lowering cholesterol levels and harmful iron stores which protects against cardiovascular disease and heart attack risk!

So once again, blood donor Superheroes thronged the Wisma Tune Ground Floor Lobby, where the National Blood Bank had set up the blood donation station. It was a first for many and a repeat for a few.

Blood Donation Tune Protect
Neither one of these donors was donor #36, but we showed our gratitude with ProSpeed badge, cream buns, biscuits and boxed drinks

So who was donor #36?

To Tune Protect, blood donation is so much more than our Superhero collectible badge or goodie bags…it is about employee volunteerism and about answering the call to save our fellow human beings who are dependent on our donation. This is the very core of our CSR mission – to serve the dependent and underserved. Have we achieved our mission? Yes, we have, thanks to our heroic donors!

Tune Protect launches the Orang Asli Financial Literacy, Empowerment & Entrepreneurship (FLEE) Programme 2018

Launch of FLEE Phase 1 – Ice-Breaking, Ideation, Brainstorming, City Walkabout & Business Pitching

FLEE Programme 2019

In 2018 Tune Protect Malaysia launched their Flagship Orang Asli Financial Literacy, Empowerment & Entrepreneurship (FLEE) Programme as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative emerging as one of the first organisations to participate in uplifting the financial literacy of the Orang Asli youth. Understanding the need for the career development of the Orang Asli youth, Tune Protect in a tripartite collaboration with the Founder of Grow the Goose, Nina Othman and Majlis Belia Orang Asli (MBOA) embarked on this programme that we developed carefully together.

FLEE is 3-phase programme that we launched in September 2018. A total of 13 participants from the various Orang Asli tribes and states were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 consisted of youth from Perak and Pahang. This pioneer group joined the bootcamp in Kuala Lumpur that ran for 4 days. A series of activities was planned for the participants who greatly enjoyed the sessions. Starting off the day was a brief introduction of the Company followed with fun ice breaking activities.

Treating them to a Walkabout Escapade midway through the course was an eye-opening experience for the participants, who were delighted with the highlights of Kuala Lumpur. It was the very first time on escalators for all of them. With their minds opened and inspired, they went back to the bootcamp with fresh ideas they wanted to brainstorm with each other and their trainers.

Group 2 consisted of youth from the Temuan tribe in Selangor, the Semelai tribe Negeri Sembilan and the Temiar tribe from Kelantan. Understanding that the Orang Asli participants do not have access on financial literacy matters, the training stressed on introducing them to a financial reality check for themselves and empowering them with dreams and aspirations to move forward towards a focus in life, job attainment and satisfaction. A brainstorming session on a Business Pitching session was part of the curriculum for the participations towards the end of the Bootcamp.

Stepping In to Save Lives During Ramadhan

Annual Blood Donation Drive 2018

Tune Protect organized a Blood Donation Drive during Ramadhan at the special request of the National Blood Bank (Pusat Darah Negara). Blood supply runs critically low during Ramadhan because our Muslim brothers and sisters are unable to donate blood. What a sense of purpose they felt when donating to save lives and to know that one blood donation can potentially save 3 lives at the time it is most needed.

Stopped the Rain from Falling
In addition to sponsoring school uniforms and in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 3 promoting Good Health and Well-Being, Tune Protect literally ‘stopped the rain from falling’ by plugging the major roof leakage which severely affected the center’s classrooms, pantry and staircase with a full sponsorship for urgent repairs. In doing so, the repairs also enabled the center to resume educational activities and lessons, in line with our mission to support quality education.

The 2017 Major Floods
The recent floods in November 2017 that hit the northwest states of Peninsular Malaysia devastated Penang, Bukit Mertajam, Kepala Batas and several other locations, killing several and displacing thousands from their homes. It was a catastrophe that hit the region unexpectedly with prolonged rainfall.

The major floods in Penang that took several lives, paralyzed the city, cut-off communication and delayed rescue efforts.

Tune Protect Emergency Flood Relief
In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 3 and 11 which promote Good Health & Well-Being, and Personal Safety, Tune Protect urgently facilitated an Emergency Flood Relief Mission costing RM50,000 with the help of Malaysia International Search & Rescue (MISAR). MISAR managed to mobilise trucks fully laden with boxes full of living essentials, hit the road in the wee hours of the morning and made their way straight for schools, homes and badly affected areas.

Boxes and MISAR rescue vehicles filled with essential supplies for the flood victims.

MISAR to the Rescue
By sunrise, MISAR’s rescue vehicles arrived at affected areas and cautiously ploughed through flood waters. Power supply was cut-off in many places by fallen trees and landslides, which also obstructed access and severed communications channels. The mission continued with the distribution of dry food, bottled water, pillows, blankets, buckets, toiletries, diapers and sanitary napkins to residents, some of whom were walking aimlessly in desperate search for help and supplies.

Tune Protect Emergency Flood Donation Drive & Flood Advisory
Back in Kuala Lumpur, Tune Protect staff raised funds internally for our colleagues affected by the floods after a few of them were relocated to Flood Relief Centers when the water levels reached dangerous levels. The Tune Protect Emergency Flood Advisory was also circulated to help employees cope with their circumstances safely. In addition to distributing living essentials, MISAR was also on standby to conduct ‘Search & Rescue’ missions while on location. Fortunately, the rain stopped, the water began receding slowly and the situation improved with time.
