TUNE PROTECT AND SUNWAY XFARMS SOW SEEDS OF SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT WITH ‘GROW & GIVE’ INITIATIVE
The “Grow & Give” programme will run across four sessions in May, July, September, and November 2025, with a total of 240 Tune Protect volunteers participating in this meaningful corporate social responsibility initiative. Each session will see the involvement of 60 employees who will contribute their time and effort to support the Petaling Jaya-based Medan Jaya community, home to over 4,000 residents, many of whom face limited access to fresh and nutritious food.
The initiative began with hands-on training at Sunway XFarms, where Tune Protect employees gained practical experience in urban farming, harvesting pesticide-free vegetables, and packing them for distribution to local beneficiaries. Leveraging this knowledge, the team went on to establish a solar-powered community farm to enable sustainable, low-impact food production for long-term community benefit. The effort is further complemented by a community clean-up drive, reinforcing environmental responsibility and contributing to a cleaner, healthier living environment.
Utilizing smart hydroponic farming technology, community farming is remarkably easy to maintain and uses up to 90% less water compared to traditional farming methods. The solar-powered system efficiently circulates water, providing crops with optimal hydration and nutrients, offering residents an accessible and sustainable way to grow their own food long-term. This modern farming technique ensures consistent yields with minimal environmental impact.
Koot Chiew Ling, Chief Strategy Officer and Chair of the Sustainability Committee Tune Protect Group said, “We remain deeply attuned to the social disparities and environmental challenges shaping our world today. Through this initiative, we are not only raising awareness but taking meaningful action by delivering practical, ground level solutions in areas such as clean energy, water efficiency, food security, and waste reduction. It is our way of addressing climate risks while giving back in ways that are relevant and sustainable. We hope to inspire a ripple effect of positive change, one community, one farm, and one volunteer at a time, that supports both people and the planet for generations to come.
“Grow & Give” is more than just an environmental or community initiative. It is about creating real human connections, meeting basic needs, and empowering people to take charge of their wellbeing. The smiles on the residents’ faces, the camaraderie among our employees, and the tangible results such as fresh homegrown vegetables and a cleaner, safer environment are powerful reminders of what we can achieve when we come together with purpose and heart. This initiative reflects Tune Protect’s belief that business success goes hand in hand with social responsibility and care for the planet,” she added.
Driven by the sustainability vision “In Tune for a Better Tomorrow”, Tune Protect is committed to building a more resilient and sustainable future, targeting 6000 volunteer hours from 2025 to 2027 with a focus on conservation and sustainability initiatives, a legacy to be passed on to the planet and generations to come. Tune Protect is expected to achieve 1,200 volunteer hours upon the completion of the four sessions of the Grow & Give programme this year.
The community farm is projected to yield over 240kg of fresh produce annually, providing residents with more than eight varieties of essential vegetables. Furthermore, this sustainable solar farm significantly reduces environmental impact, avoiding over 1,500 sqft of deforestation, 3 tonnes of carbon emissions, 56 tonnes of water, and 960 pieces of plastic typically associated with conventional vegetable farming.
Eleanor Choong, COO of Sunway XFarms, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration. “We are pleased to be able to build this community farm alongside Tune Protect, and we are excited to see the fruits of the residents’ labour,” she said. “At Sunway XFarms, empowering urban communities to grow their own food is important to us, and we have always provided different teaching methods to educate students of all levels and socioeconomic statuses. After all, everyone needs to eat, and access to nutritious food shouldn’t be a privilege.”
Introducing the residents to fresh vegetables, Tune Protect distributed 50 bags of fresh vegetables, introducing residents to the healthy produce and the benefits of urban farming. Tune Protect staff also led a clean-up drive in communal areas, collecting over 170 kilograms of recyclable waste, including paper, metal scraps, plastic, glass, and electronic waste. This collected waste will be delivered to a recycling partner, with the proceeds benefiting the residence association to help maintain and improve apartment facilities.
“Tune Protect and Sunway XFarms’ contributions have empowered our community’s economy, raising awareness on sustainable agriculture and recycling practices among the residents,” said Norlizah binti Jaaman, Secretary of the Medan Jaya Residents’ Association. “We want to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to all the volunteers and committee members. May our continued efforts bring lasting impact to the local community.” This collaboration between Tune Protect and Sunway XFarms demonstrates how innovative partnerships can drive a significant change beyond the boardroom. As the “Grow & Give” initiative takes root, it stands as a testament to the power of collective action where corporations, communities, and changemakers come together not only to plant seeds in soil, but also in hearts and minds. With every harvest and act of kindness, a more inclusive, empowered, and sustainable tomorrow comes into view.
